Our well/structure inspection program is the first of its kind in Kendall County

June 30, 2007

Dear Neighbor,

I hope you and your family are enjoying your summer. Since I last wrote you in late January, my entire team of employees, engineers and contractors has been very busy making equipment, safety and beautification improvements to the Lisbon Quarry (formerly Valley Run). You can see some of these improvements at our Quarry Improvement Update.

A very important part of our work is the development of free and voluntary structure and domestic well inspection programs for neighbors within 1.5 miles of our entire property. Though we expect little impact on our neighbors, we are bringing this first-of-its-kind program to Kendall County as part of our quarry upgrade program.

Any domestic well(s) and structure(s) on your property located within the 1.5 mile area are eligible for these programs, and we highly encourage you to consider participating. These programs are being conducted for Vulcan Materials Company by outside experts and will help resolve any well and structural matters determined to be caused by our operation.

How it works:

1. Property owners with homes/structures and/or domestic wells within 1.5 miles of the Vulcan Materials Company Lisbon Quarry are eligible for the free and voluntary structure and domestic well inspection programs.

2. Review the enclosed information provided by Vibra-Tech, Inc., the firm conducting the structural inspections, and GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., the firm conducting the domestic well inspections. [SEE LINKS ABOVE}

3. Complete and return both registration forms in their respective pre-addressed, postage-paid envelopes. It is important that your responses are postmarked no later than July 14.

4. If you choose to participate in the domestic well inspection program, you will need to schedule an appointment by calling Darlene Fissler at GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., at 800-789-5848 no later than July 14. Inspections will last approximately 60 minutes and be conducted during the first two weeks in August. The inspector will need to access the well head and a functioning water spigot or faucet. The survey will consist of:

  • A short interview with the current resident or property owner to document any known existing issues or concerns with the well and well construction information, such as approximate ages and depth of the well and pump.

  • An inspection of the well to obtain the total depth, pump or pump intake depth, water level (depth to the water table), and other physical parameters. A copy of the original drillers log would be useful, if available.

  • A water sample may be obtained from the well and submitted to an analytical laboratory for analysis of several primary chemical and biological parameters.

  • The information collected and the analytical testing results will be compiled and maintained by Vulcan.

  • Participants will receive a copy of all information pertaining to their well.

    5. If you choose to participate in the structure inspection program, you will need to schedule an appointment by calling Debra or Dane at Vibra-Tech, Inc. at (630) 858-0681 no later than July 14. Inspections will last approximately 90 minutes, depending upon the number of structures to be inspected and their condition, and will be conducted 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, ending the week of July 20. The survey will consist of:

  • Verbal documentation on cassette tape and photographs of interior and exterior conditions of walls, floors, foundations, chimneys, windows, driveways and sidewalks.

  • Any outbuildings such as garages will also be inspected. Participants will receive a copy of the inspection report.

Again, these free programs are completely voluntary and will help us address any well and structural issues determined to be caused by our operation.

In summary, first complete and return the structure (PDF) and well (PDF) forms. Then, for the program(s) you would like to participate in, call their respective phone numbers to schedule an appointment. That's it.

In the meantime, or if in the future, you have any questions, comments, suggestions or complaints, please do not hesitate to contact me at (815) 736-6000 or www.vmcKendall.com. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely,

    Steve Novak
    General Superintendent, South Region

PS: I also want to thank those who braved the cold weather and bitter wind to visit with us at the Neighbor Reception on January 31. We hope to plan other community events this year.
