Dear New Neighbor January 22, 2007
Dear Neighbor,
My name is Steve Novak and I would like to introduce myself. I have been with Vulcan Materials Company since 1986. As you may have heard, on Jan. 19 Vulcan Materials Company purchased Valley Run Stone and its assets. This is an opportunity to expand our commitment to the area.
My new job is to operate the Vulcan Materials Company Lisbon Quarry to the highest industry standards and make sure we are responsive to the needs of the community - you. I most recently managed our Kankakee Quarry, where we just received a national award for our beautification and operational improvement efforts.
In the last year many of you have had the opportunity to get to know us through our ongoing application process to zone and permit a quarry on the Peart property at Joliet Road and Rt. 47 in Lisbon Township.
Now you will have the opportunity to get to know us as a neighbor and as a local employer. By working together you will be able to see what we mean when we say we're committed to operating in Kendall County as a socially responsible employer, in a socially responsible way.
Though we plan to operate at or around the Lisbon Quarry's existing production level, we have a lot of work ahead of us as we upgrade the facility for you, our employees and customers. You should begin noticing some of these improvements very soon. Our plans include:
Making equipment, safety and beautification improvements. Upgrading controls and procedures to reduce truck track-out. Bringing in our operations, engineering and blasting experience/technology. Developing a comprehensive groundwater monitoring program. Preparing a structural and domestic well inspection program. Working with customer truck drivers to promote safety. Establishing an active partnership with community organizations and local schools.
I will also be your local contact for matters concerning the Peart property. As we have said often, Kendall County needs the additional aggregate materials and continuing our application to develop the Peart property remains essential to meeting that need. Given my local responsibility on the ground at the Lisbon Quarry, I believe I can help ensure these plans are as responsive to the community as possible. Together both projects demonstrate our commitment to Kendall County as we work to help meet market need while helping to keep local construction and infrastructure costs as low as possible.
If you have a few minutes on Jan. 31, I invite you to a neighbor reception from 3:30 - 5 p.m. at the Lisbon Quarry (formally Valley Run Stone) for coffee, hot chocolate and donuts. We will also plan a community informational session in the future.
In the meantime, or if in the future, you have any questions, comments, suggestions or complaints, please do not hesitate to contact me at (815) 736-6000 or reach me via our local Web site, www.vmcKendall.com. I look forward to getting to know you.
Sincerely,
Steve Novak General Superintendent, South Region
