Midwest Division: A leader in safety, environment and community

All of us at the Midwest Division (MWD) strive to maintain an industry leadership position in all aspects of safety, health and environmental stewardship.

  • We work with the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA), Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), Industrial Health Council (IHC), Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers (IAAP), and governmental regulatory agencies to identify the best practices.

  • The 2006 MWD accident frequency rate was 68% lower (better) than the national industry average.

  • In 2006 IAAP awarded 23 MWD facilities with the IAAP Gold designation for safety achievement and 12 facilities the Excellence in Safety Banner for safety performance.

  • In 2006 NSSGA recognized 10 MWD facilities with 4-9 years of operation without incurring a single reportable injury.

  • We partner with the Wildlife Habitat Council and are an active supporter of Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation (Dundee, IL). Our Macon Sand & Gravel (Decatur, IL) and Dousman Sand & Gravel (Oconomowoc, WI) facilities are certified wildlife habitat sites. In fact, with 36 sites, Vulcan Materials Company has more WHC certified sites than any other participating company in the United States.

We are committed to continually improving our performance as a socially responsible employer.

  • In 2007, Fortune Magazine ranked Vulcan the No. 1 most admired company in its industry sector and ranked Vulcan among the top 10 companies in the Fortune 1000 for its commitment to social responsibility.

  • Five MWD facilities received the prestigious 2006 NSSGA About Face Showplace Award recognizing the highest level of achieving in quarry beautification and operational improvements. Since the award program's inception, MWD facilities have earned 19 About Face Showplace Awards.

  • Through community information lines, community advisory groups, open houses, tours and our active community role, we listen and respond to community needs. Our groundwater monitoring and structural inspection programs help everyone work through issues that could occur.

  • Our Adopt-A-School program forges long-term partnerships between our local facilities and schools to help enhance student learning.

  • We have been locally and nationally recognized for our efforts to minimize any burdens our facilities may place upon our local communities and we constantly work to improve the handling of noise, dust and vibration.
